Test the internet connection first

A wired Ethernet test is the most reliable way to measure the broadband connection. Use a modern laptop with a gigabit Ethernet port where possible.

For Wi-Fi tests, use a recent device connected to the 5 GHz band and test close to the router.

Common Wi-Fi issues

• Try a second device to determine whether the fault affects one device or the whole network.
• Disable Wi-Fi Assist or automatic mobile-data switching if a phone leaves Wi-Fi unexpectedly.
• Avoid plug-in repeaters where possible; mesh Wi-Fi is generally a better option.
• Use Ethernet for TVs, games consoles and desktop computers where practical.

Sky Q interference

Sky Q boxes can create additional wireless interference because the main box communicates with Mini boxes over Wi-Fi.

Connecting Sky Q equipment by Ethernet and disabling its Wi-Fi is the best option where practical.
